Service-learning is a holistic activity that should elicit both academic and individual growth. My hope is that by the end of my trip to Ghana; I will have experienced both! As part of the Graduate Department of Counseling at Hampton University, it is my solemn duty to take this trip and bring back the valuable knowledge of my experiences. The experiential learning that occurs outside of the classroom, such as a service learning experience in Ghana, may be more influential for me than any of my classroom learning experiences. I believe that it will truly be a life-changing experience!
To this end, service-learning for me is the educational approach that will expose me to diverse environments and experiences to gain a deeper understanding about the populations I intend to serve. Although, I have read about the benefits of service-learning being supported in studies, I believe it to be imperative to my overall success to partake in service learning this early in my program. Integrating a pre-practicum service-learning experience into my counselor education program can only benefit me exponentially. It can help me better understand the concepts discussed in class through direct exposure to issues and strengths in the international community. Further, service-learning experiences can help all school counseling students to develop a social justice orientation and develop much needed advocacy skills.
