Osuke's 2021 Expedition to the Namibian Desert
My Travel Story
Why I want to join the expedition:
I am currently studying Biology for A-level, and I have a big passion for wildlife and conservation. I am very excited for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, as I will be able to discover the beautiful landscapes of Namibia and at the same time learn about the habitats of animals such as African elephants, black rhinos, giraffes… This also involves us taking part in scientific fieldwork to research the habitats and studying the Namib Desert’s unique environment. We will be getting world-class expedition professionals training us, as well as working in teams with students across the country from different backgrounds, which I am excited for as I will get to know new people and work with them throughout the 3-week expedition.
This expedition will be very challenging, as I will have to push myself well out of my normal comfort zone. The expedition involves us working together for 3 weeks in a desert with no toilet facilities, fresh water or food supplies, and of course with no electricity, no chargers – so absolutely no mobile phones! We will be responsible for all aspects of this wilderness journey, from digging latrines to catering and daily planning and agreement of our itinerary and expedition challenges, we will have to work together resiliently. It will also include physical challenges as we will need to walk across the desert for several hours per day. This may sound exhausting, but for me this is another part of the expedition that I want to enjoy and be able to accomplish as I love doing sports (such as football, baseball) and being able to view the wonderful landscapes and coming across rare species during the walk sounds incredible.
Where will the fundraised money go towards?
All of your money going towards this page will be donated to the British Exploring Society– a world-class youth development charity which helps to offer wonderful opportunities like this expedition to students living in deprived areas of the UK, creating a positive impact in their lives so that they can face new challenges and bring about change.
Why I need your help -
I am so excited for this once in a lifetime opportunity to go to the Namib Desert; as a life science student with huge determination to have a positive impact on wildlife and conservation, going to the oldest desert on the planet is like a dream come true for me. I am sure it will help me to widen my views and contribute to my career ambitions and my decision-making process for university and beyond. I know that I will also gain the sort of real-life skills that help propel me through life such as reciprocity, resilience, resourcefulness and building my character to cope with adversity and challenge.
Whilst the British Exploring Society look after all our training and our living and travelling expenses and equipment, I will have to pay for all my injections and personal desert expedition kit, on top of the fundraising challenge of £1,700. It’s a lot to find, particularly in lockdown as many of the fundraising and work activities that I might normally have been able to do are just not possible now. I will be extremely grateful for any contributions that you might be able to donate to my cause – every little helps!
Thank you for taking your time to read. Below you will some more information regarding the expedition from the British Exploring Society website. I will continue to update all my sponsors with my progress and to let you know about my fundraising challenges and activities in preparation for the journey.
Many thanks in advance,
Osuke
Who are the British Exploring Society?
British Exploring Society is a world class youth development charity which empowers and equips young people with the courage, resilience and determination to make the most of their future. British Exploring Society has been running expeditions since 1932. Since then we have organised over 100 expeditions across all seven continents with over 10,000 Leaders and Explorers having taken part. We take young people to remote locations where they face challenges, gain skills and learn about themselves and the fragile environments that they explore. They return with a new-found confidence and self-belief which they carry forward to their future life. More than this, they forge friendships for life and become part of a unique community of explorers with shared perspectives on the world.
How do we get to Namibia?
Departing the UK you will fly to Windhoek, Namibia. This flight will not be direct - full flight details will be shared at a later date. After arriving in Windhoek,
you will travel to base camp over four hours outside of the city.
What will we do in Namibia?
Your Fire (team) will have the opportunity to discover the vast and beautiful landscape of Namibia. Trek through this impressive landscape while learning about the habitats of majestic animals like elusive African elephants, black rhinos,
and giraffes. Gain new practical skills as you document your experience through creative media projects and take part in scientific fieldwork.
What can we expect?
Throughout your time in the Namibia, your Fire will be wild camping. There will be no access to toilets or showers. Food will be prepared on stoves and consist of some fresh food, dried and tinned food, with snacks during the day. There is often little or no mobile phone reception or regular access to electricity. Anyone joining us on expedition should not expect to be able to contact home whilst away. At the heart of all British Exploring Society expeditions is a skilled team of expedition leaders, medics, scientists, educators and youth workers. Your Leaders will be with you throughout your expedition, working with you as part of a team and helping you learn skills, expand your knowledge and develop as a person every day.
