My Travel Story

by: Lauren Stretar Start Date: May 1, 2018 - End Date: Aug 31, 2018
For as long as I can remember, writing while traveling has been a major part in my life. Along with as many books I can shove in my backpack, a notebook always accompanies me, specifically a battered, taped and stapled purple notebook that has served as my planning book since ninth grade. It has spatters of a novel and countless plans that have yet to be put into action, and has been a constant companion on winding road trips through forests and mountains. Even when it physically hurts me to write in it - I have tendonitis through my entire dominant hand -, ignoring the pull of inspiration that comes from the scenery can hurt more. If there is only one thing I know for certain about this trip, it is that this notebook would be with me. Writing has always come naturally to me, but writing while away from the familiar streets of my hometown is easy. The words flow and I am home.

While on trips it is easy to focus on my writing because I oftentimes have no reason to do anything else. School, on the other hand, is a different story altogether. Though I am a creative writing major, homework and essays from other classes seem to dominate my time and the moments I have for personal writing seem to dwindle each day. Placing myself in an environment where I would almost solely focus on my craft would change everything. I would be learning while doing what I love, and to top it off, I would be traveling; I would find someplace new to make my home, and more than anything, I would love the opportunity to make Dublin my home.
