My Travel Story

by: Olga Nasadik Start Date: Oct 2, 2024 - End Date: Apr 1, 2025
I have suffered from depression and emotional instability almost all my life. In 2020, I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder. I am receiving a combination of sustained therapy and medication, but it is well known that there is no easy cure for mental health problems and that dealing with mental illness is a long process.

I live in a cold, cloudy city in Russia. My job as a nurse offers no career or personal growth. My family shames me and ignores books like "I Hate You-Don't Leave Me". Trying to make progress in my treatment, I left the city and travelled for a few months to India, Laos, Vietnam, Myanmar and Thailand. It was an amazing experience: walking in the mountains, between fields, forests, lakes, villages, sleeping in a tent, hitchhiking. I slept well for the first time in years.

Then I went back to Moscow and my condition got worse. I reached my lowest point and found no better solution than to quit my job and go to travel again.

How does travelling help me to feel better? I think (and my therapist agrees) that time in the sun and outdoors are crucial for my recovery. Adventures help me distance myself from negative aspects of my daily life. Travelling makes me focus on my body, beauty and the nature. My therapist says I should keep treatment in a friendly and warm environment for at least this autumn and winter.

I very much hope that you help me with my recovery. I can pay for my therapist and medications from my savings, but I need your help with travel expenses, which is about $30 a day.
