Bridging Technology and Spirituality: A Summer of Discovery in Korea

I'm a freshman at Davidson College studying computer science, and I'm working to make a summer abroad program in South Korea a reality. I'm on full financial aid here, which has been life-changing, but there's no aid available for summer programs. That's why I'm reaching out.

I was an all-A student throughout high school and am on track to maintain at least a 3.0 GPA during my first year at Davidson. Academics have always been important to me, but so has learning that goes beyond the classroom.

I've never traveled abroad. In fact, I've never even left the southeastern United States. Korea would be my first experience in a completely different part of the world, and honestly, that's both exciting and a little daunting.

What draws me to Korea specifically is the fascinating tension between cutting-edge technology and deep spiritual tradition. I'm interested in how ancient Korean Buddhism and modern Korean Christianity coexist within a society that's leading the world in tech innovation. As someone studying computer science while also exploring bigger questions about meaning and purpose, I want to see how a culture balances both.

What I Hope to Gain

I want to understand how data and technology can serve people in ways that respect cultural values and traditions. Korea seems like the ideal place to explore this because it's a country where ancient temples sit next to tech company headquarters and where people are deeply connected to both their spiritual heritage and the digital future. Studying data analysis in this context will help me think more critically about how we use information and technology in ways that honor human dignity and cultural identity. I hope to attend Korea University's International Summer Campus, right in the heart of Seoul.

Without help, this won't happen. The program costs cover tuition, housing, meals, and flights. I'm working and saving what I can, but it's not enough on my own.

If you're able to contribute anything, I would be incredibly grateful. I'll document the experience and share what I'm learning along the way.

Thank you for considering supporting this journey. My trip will only be a month and a half.
