My Travel Story

by: Lexi Powers Start Date: Dec 2, 2019 - End Date: Mar 25, 2020
"This course will use Baja California, Mexico as a model to study emerging topics in marine conservation by examining the relationships between small-scale fisheries, coastal communities, marine megafauna (sea turtles, sharks, and marine mammals), and community-based conservation. We will focus on the integration of science, practice, socioeconomics, and culture in the context of fisheries and coastal conservation. Topics will include the ecological and social sustainability of fisheries, marine megafauna ecology and conservation, ecotourism, community, and market-based conservation, and emerging conservation innovation.", this quote was pulled directly from the overview of the study abroad program page. As a student who will soon be adding a sustainability minor to her academic career, the Baja trip is incredibly appealing as I get to see and experience hands-on what conservation can do and what it can help. I am incredibly lucky to have this opportunity as a first-year student and I'm beyond excited to participate!
