My Travel Story

by: Emma Moulton Start Date: Feb 16, 2018 - End Date: May 16, 2018
This is a two week international studies course in collaboration with Manado State Polytechnic located in Manado, Indonesia and will support their effort to map and understand the health of the coral reef system on the island. Me and Kelly (a fellow Freshwater Studies student/H2Bro) will focus on water quality specifics. We will be using water quality testing equipment to gather data that the Marine Tech students will use in correlation with Manado State Polytechnic to access the damage induced by a variety of threats.

Indonesia is in the center of the coral triangle, which has the highest marine diversity on earth. The coral reefs are under threat due to a combination of natural and anthropogenic factors as well as climate variation. The objective of this study is to link challenges for marine tourism sustainability in Bunaken National Park by accessing community-related aspects, tourism related activities, and natural threat aspects.

    First day of Sonde training!
After yesterday's planning meeting, Kelly and I got a chance to test out the Sonde for the first time this semester. We had a bit of confusion with the programming at first but once we got it all figured out it was fairly simple. We're both so excited.

In other news, passport application has been sent out, flights are being purchased, and travel insurance is good to go (with extreme sports coverage for diving!) Just over 2 months left!
