My Travel Story

by: Maris Amsberry Start Date: Nov 28, 2017 - End Date: May 27, 2018
Hello All!

I am incredibly blessed to be sharing this with you and I am grateful for your consideration in making a donation! In June, I will have the amazing opportunity of going on a service trip to Peru through my school and in partnership with Unearthed Travel along with several of my closest friends. This endeavor will force me to dust off my spanish skills, expand my horizons, step outside of my comfort zone and serve those in need. During this trip, I will be visiting a local community center near Lima, Peru, backpacking through the Andes Mountains, and visiting Macchupicchu and lake Titicaca, where I will serve the local communities by contributing to a sustainable development project. This will be a once in a life time opportunity for me to be able to let go of my stress after graduation, and immerse myself into the Peruvian culture with my OLP sisters and mentors and truly challenge myself to grow as a leader as I prepare for the next chapter in my life.

Here is what Unearthed has to say about the program and a little more deatail on exactly what I will be doing:

"Unearthed runs challenging, overseas adventures for young people that help shape who they become. While overseas the students will take on responsibility for all aspects of the itinerary planning and logistics. Under the skillful supervision of an Unearthed Leadership Instructor, students manage the team budget, transport, food, team briefings and sightseeing for the entire group.

A key element of the Unearthed experience is a community service project. The project will take place in a small community along the shores of Lake Titicaca during which time students will have the chance to interact with local people and contribute to a sustainable development project with the aim to work on village infrastructure – building projects supporting community based tourism and the local economy. It provides a genuine cultural immersion experience not available to the ordinary tourist. The team will also complete a trek through the Sacred Valley to explore the natural beauty and rural landscape of Peru. In addition to the project and trek, the students travel back-packer style to explore the sights and visit places of interest along their journey.

Students will call upon qualities of interpersonal strengths like gratitude, which enable harmonious relationships with other people; intrapersonal strengths like grit and determination, which enable achievement; and intellectual strengths like curiosity, which enable a sense of purpose to create a world where kindness, fairness and human well-being are the norm."

Thank You for reading and any donation helps!
