Anyone that has known me any length of time, has known that my goal in life has been to work with women and children in Africa. Since my return to school in 2023, this passion and drive has only increased, especially through the study of Anthropology. I am set to graduate with highest honors this coming fall, and am trying to evaluate what the next stage of my life looks like after that event. As part of this process of discovery, I have determined that I can no longer wait to start this work, and will be going to Northern Africa this July to work with children through International Volunteer HQ. I am hopeful that this will help me determine post graduation steps, and be a leaping off platform for many more volunteer trips deeper into Africa, as well as to India and South America, as well as potentially a career. My primary focus has always been infectious disease prevention and family planning for the sake of preventing disease, with an emphasis on helping women and children. I worked for many years with HIV & AIDS organizations developing and implementing educational programs, as well as doing pre and post test counseling, and direct client services. I was also an activist for much of that time. Prior to that I worked for a variety of humanitarian causes, starting with The Great Peace March for Nuclear Disarmament in 1986. I am very excited to discover what my next steps are and where and to whom I can be of the most service. I chose Northern Africa because I only have a couple of weeks between semesters and want to be able to acclimate without too much distance between the US and my destination. In the future, I will target much further spots. There has not been a time in the last 35 years that this was not on my mind. When I asked my son (a couple of days ago) what the one thing I had always said I had to do was, he replied, 'Go to Africa and work with children' - and here we are. I hope that this is the first of a series of trips that will define the next part of my life, and going forward, include my own children as well. I appreciate all contributions which will cover the program fees, registrations, background reports, flights, travel insurance and time off from work, and I thank everyone for helping me make this happen.
