My Travel Story

by: Isha Rajangam Start Date: May 15, 2024 - End Date: Jun 13, 2024
Hey! I’m Isha, a second-year physiotherapy student at the University of Leicester, UK. I am going to Costa Rica for 2 weeks in July to volunteer with Marine Conversation and support local communities there. This will be through teaching English and sharing the importance of supporting their local environment, helping to build and repair infrastructure within the conservation site, and local infrastructure and community centres. The main purpose of the trip is to help support and protect turtles.

I chose to do this programme in Costa Rica as various turtle species such as the Leatherback, Green, Olive Ridley, and Hawksbill nest and leave their hatchlings along the coast of Costa Rica. However, they are also endangered due to being poached for their meat and lose safe territories on beaches due to human activities such as pollution and climate change, which disrupt and threaten marine biodiversity.

Many people may think that this is small or less meaningful, but sea turtles are an essential part of the marine ecosystem as they play a big role in protecting coral reefs and influencing other species.

The money raised will help support local communities as well as provide resources for volunteers like myself to do our part to protect the environment and ensure that conservation efforts are sustainable and keep the marine ecosystem alive and flourishing for future generations to appreciate and experience.

Any extra money raised will also be donated to an NGO close to my family and me. This NGO is Vasanthan Library School in India, which helps support children by reducing the education gap and enriching learning for those who do not get access to it. This is through mentoring programmes and volunteers who take their time out to teach in various areas that they are proficient in and support children with their higher education financially.

From this trip, I hope to gain more experience and perspectives of our world and other communities and cultures, which would help me improve myself as an individual and in the future, working with patients from diverse backgrounds.

Any donation made for both causes is greatly appreciated and would make a difference in two different areas while also providing a sustainable future for others.
