My Travel Story

Hi! I am Mei!
I am a student of a medical school in Japan.
I am happy if you are intrested in my journey!

I am embarking on a journey to Sri Lanka, where I will engage in both educational and medical volunteering. This mission holds significant personal and professional meaning for me, and I am seeking your support to make it a reality.

In Sri Lanka, I will be teaching Japanese to schoolchildren, introducing them to the language and the rich tapestry of Japanese games and culture. This is not just about language exchange; it is about building bridges between cultures, fostering a sense of global community, and understanding among young minds.

My decision to volunteer in Sri Lanka is deeply rooted in my family's history. My grandmother, a survivor from Nagasaki, has shared with me the harrowing stories of the atomic bomb. My father, a Vietnamese national, has recounted the experiences of my grandfather, who served in the Vietnam War. These stories have profoundly shaped my perspective on the importance of peace and the protection of innocent lives, especially children. It is from these experiences that my aspiration to become a pediatrician emerged – a dream driven by the desire to safeguard the future of our children.

While in Sri Lanka, I plan to not only teach but also engage the children in meaningful conversations about peace. I will bring illustrated books and manga depicting Japan’s war history, translated into Sinhala and English, to donate to the schools. It is my hope that these stories will inspire the children to think about peace and the importance of a world free from conflict.

In addition to my educational endeavors, I will immerse myself in studying Sri Lanka’s medical practices, including their traditional medicine. By learning from their healthcare system and comparing it to Japan’s, I aim to incorporate the best practices from both into my future work as a physician. My goal is to improve the quality of care I can offer and bring innovative solutions to pediatric care.

This journey represents a step towards a larger dream – a world where children can grow up in peace and health, unburdened by the shadows of war. As a student, I am eager to start making a difference now, laying the groundwork for a brighter future.

日本の皆さまへ。

私は、現在医学部で学ぶ日本人学生です。
私の活動に興味を持ってくださりありがとうございます。

私は、スリランカにて、教育と医療のボランティアをしたいと考えています。
そのために、ぜひ、皆さんの力を貸していただきたいです。

教育ボランティアでは、スリランカの子どもたちに、日本語を教えたり、日本の文化を伝え、日本の伝統的な遊びを一緒に楽しみたいと考えています。同様に、スリランカの人々の考え方や文化を教えていただきたいと思っています。これは単なる語学交流ではなく、それぞれの文化について学び、国際的な知見を養う重要な機会だと捉えています。特に、平和について、スリランカの子どもたちと一緒に考えてみたいです。

そもそも私がこのような活動をしようと思ったきっかけは、私のルーツにあります。私の母方の祖母は、1947年に長崎県に生まれ、原爆投下を受けた長崎の街で育ちました。私の父は、ベトナム人であり、父方の祖父はベトナム戦争で従軍していました。2人は、私に、平和の大切さを教えてくれました。今、私が戦争のない国に生まれ、平和な暮らしを享受できているのは、そんな時代を作ってくれた先輩方のおかげです。
同様に、私もこれから生まれてくる子どもたちが、そして、今も戦争や貧困の只中で生きている子どもたちが、健やかに、幸せに暮らせる社会を作らなくてはいけません。
小児科医になりたい、という思いは、そのような中から自然と生まれました。

訪問する学校で、図書館が新設されるとのことで、本の寄贈も行いたいと考えています。日本の戦争や原爆の歴史について描いた絵本と漫画です。それぞれ、シンハラ語訳と英語訳をされています。図書館を利用する子どもたちが、日本やスリランカ、そして世界の平和について考えてくれるきっかけになると嬉しいです。

医療ボランティアでは、スリランカの病院で病院実習をします。
スリランカの伝統医学や、医療の考え方を学び、それを吸収し日本に持ち帰りたいと思います。
日錫それぞれの良さを統合し、将来の医師像、目指すべき医療に繋げていきたいです。
