My Travel Story

by: Motega de Graaf Start Date: May 7, 2024 - End Date: Feb 1, 2025
Hey all, last year was a really tough year with school. I was treated poorly due to my sexuality and discriminated against. Meanwhile, i was and still am struggling with mental health. All these factors combined ultimately made me stop school to work on myself.

That summer i went on my first self-planned vacation: to Estonia! This truly awakenee the traveler in me and made me yearn for more. Sonce then i've been to Poland, Germany, Belgium, Finland Lithuania, England and Madeira. As you can tell i've been around quite a bit since then. Every time i go on a new adventure it brings a little extra joy to my life.

Since just before my Estonia trip i had picked up every possible extra shift at work, worked overtime nearly every day and saved up almost all my money to travel. I of course used this money to fund my travel, but at the meantime i was also saving a large amount of my hard earned money on a seperate savings account with a specific goal.

That goal was a backpacking trip to South East Asia (mostly) to discover myself and figure out what i want to do with my life. My sister had done so 3 times in the past 10 years, which honestly always made little kid me very jealous. Wanted to do that too. I wanted to go to Thailand. I wanted to go to Indonesia. I wanted to go to Vietnam. It just seemed impossible. Until i realised it really wasn't that impossible.

At first i couldn't decide where i wanted to go, Nicaragua, the USA, New Zealand, Thailand, etc etc. Everywhere. I want to go everywhere. Eventually i landed on the trip to SEA because of just how different it is to Europe. The weather, food, scenery, culture, people, everything. Of course this is true with any place, but what pushed Asia over the edge was the proximity and accesibility to other countries.

Things were going swimmingly and my goal of 10.000 by February of 2025 seemed realistic!.. Until my job fired my illegally and unexpectedly. Just like that i missed 2 months of pay and had to take large chunks out of my special savings account, until it eventually bled dry.

I am gratefull for all the traveling i've done and that i am even blessed to be born in a country where travel is so easily accessible. But i don't want to give up on my dream. That's why i'm asking for help.

I am hoping to crowdfund as much as possible! Even 1 Euro would help me. I am employed again, so i've started saving up again. I am focussing on this trip entirely and do not have plans for any other trips this year. Yet my goal of 10.000 by February is farfetched to say the least. I don't make nearly enough hours with no chance of another job or working more hours. Yet i will keep trying.

My planned route is globally shown as this Fundraisers thumbnail:

Thailand, (30 days)
>
Laos (30 days) or Myanmar (15 days) (depending on how much i saved up and the situation in Myanmar. If i go to Myanmar I'll go to Laos from there.)

Cambodia (25 days)

the Philliphines, (20 days) where i will see how much i have left. If i have enough money leftover i'll be taking a detour to Hong Kong, Taiwan, Vietnam, South Korea or Japan. Which one and how many of these will depend on how much i can spend while still completing my main route.
>
Malaysia (40 days)

Brunei, (1-5 days, possible detour while in Malaysia)

Singapore (7-14 days).

In the unlikely event i arrive in Singapore with thousands leftover i would love to go to Indonesia or fly to Australia and/or New Zealand (probably the latter).

The 10.000 would cover everything about the trip. My backpacking equipment, flight tickets, shots, etc etc.

If you read all of this and would like to help make my dream come true, pleaso do!

If not, i still hope you have an awesome day ^^
