My Travel Story

by: Alexandra Chirvase Start Date: Nov 18, 2017 - End Date: Feb 5, 2018
On the 11th of February, I will be going to Sri Lanka to undertake a 6 weeks voluntary Mental Health placement with SLV Global - a UK based organisation that provides Psychology graduates with hand on experience abroad in the mental health sector. Having recently completed my Masters in Health Psychology, this is the perfect occasion for me to put my degree to good use and take on this once in a lifetime opportunity to go to Sri Lanka to make a difference in the community by facilitating well-being.

My first week in Sri Lanka will involve a training week, which will teach me to work in a different cultural environment and how to overcome language barriers. Once I complete the training I will be splitting my time between eight different projects with SLV. These will involve; running activities for patients and using sensory, music and creative therapies to engage with patients on a variety of wards in multiple institutions. In addition, I’ll also be working with individuals with special needs and teaching English to children and to young people on vocational courses.

I am really looking forward to working in a completely new culture in a challenging environment and SLV’s focus on ethical and sustainable projects is something that really stood out to me about them. During my time in Sri Lanka, I will be living like a local with a Sri Lankan family and travelling on the local buses.

For those that wish me to sponsor me, I will be extremely grateful and promise to keep you updated during my trip, bring back a souvenir and make you a Sri Lankan curry on return :).

Please get in touch if you have any questions.

Best Wishes
