My Travel Story

by: Iona Wingfield Start Date: Feb 24, 2017 - End Date: Feb 23, 2018
In 2004,  I remember vividly the horrific event that took place on Boxing Day. The Indian Ocean earthquake created a devastating tsunami, claiming over 30,196 lives in Sri Lanka.

Thirteen years later, and it is safe to say the majority of the world has forgotten about the beautiful tear drop shaped island. Not only are the people of Sri Lanka currently still recovering from the tsunami, but the shadow of the civil war, which ended 25 years ago, is still looming over the island.

It is evident that Sri Lanka's population is in need of more psychological support than current resources can provide. On average, there is one psychiatrist for every 500,000 people in Sri Lanka, and the primary method of treatment for those with mental health issues is pharmacological. The scarcity of beds on mental health wards is apparent, although the tight knit community rallies for those who desperately need help.

This is why, on the 4th of June 2018, I have decided to fly over to Sri Lanka to make a difference.

I discovered an amazing association which provides placements in Sri Lanka! SLV.Global allow their volunteers to work at a number of psychiatric facilities and community initiatives, to provide the community with much needed stimulation and human contact.

This is an excellent opportunity, not only to gain invaluable work experience and learn about psychology in a different culture, but also to help the people of Sri Lanka and support the current psychological work which is currently available in the country.

Of course, an excellent opportunity does not come without a price. Like everything worth value, I am going to work exceptionally hard to raise enough funds to pay for the placement fee, the flights, and other things essential for the trip. The total cost will be around £1800. This is where I need your help! Do not worry; I am not expecting anywhere near that amount from you, but it would be amazing if you could consider financially supporting such an amazing cause!
