This elective will significantly enhance my education and future career as a doctor. Working in hospitals in Barbados and South Africa will expose me to different healthcare systems, patient needs, and resource levels. I will gain hands-on experience with conditions that are less common in the UK and develop clinical independence, cultural awareness, and adaptability. These are all important qualities for becoming a well-rounded doctor who can provide compassionate, informed care to a wide range of patients.

While I will be learning, I also want to give back. I plan to get involved with local health projects, including patient education, outreach, and support in busy clinics.

As a Black British Caribbean medical student, this elective holds personal meaning. It gives me a chance to connect with my heritage while learning about global health in new environments. I want to learn from healthcare workers who share aspects of my background and gain insight into how culture and community shape medical practice. This experience will help me grow not just as a doctor but also as a person.

This elective is meaningful because it brings together my personal background and professional goals. It is a chance to explore where I come from and reflect on the kind of doctor I want to become.
