I am Tushara Sampath and I am a villager living in a Sinhalese Bodu village in sri Lanka and I also want to go with my wife to visit the top historical places of India including Buddagaya, the top of Boduddaya, and I would like to go .

Buddhist Stupas, commonly referred to as "Buddhist sites" or "Boddhasthans" in India, are sacred monuments that encapsulate the essence of Buddhism's teachings, history, and cultural integration into the Indian subcontinent. These stupas are primarily mound-like or hemispherical structures containing relics, typically the remains of Buddhist monks or nuns, and are used as places of meditation.

The tradition of building stupas began with the historical Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama, who instructed his followers to place his remains in a mound-like structure after his death. This practice evolved and spread across India as Buddhism grew, leading to the construction of numerous stupas across the country. Among the most famous are the Great Stupa at Sanchi, the Dhamek Stupa in Sarnath, and the Mahabodhi Temple in Bodh Gaya.

Sanchi Stupa, located in Madhya Pradesh, is perhaps the most renowned, with intricate carvings that depict various stages of the Buddha’s life and teachings. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site, celebrated for its grand architecture and beautifully preserved gateways (Toranas).

Dhamek Stupa in Sarnath marks the spot where the Buddha delivered his first sermon after attaining enlightenment, revealing the Eightfold Path to his first disciples. This stupa, with its massive and imposing structure, continues to be a focal point of Buddhist pilgrimages and a testament to the religion’s enduring legacy in India.

Mahabodhi Temple Complex in Bodh Gaya is another pivotal site, believed to be the location where the Buddha attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree. The temple complex includes a large and venerable stupa and remains a major pilgrimage destination for Buddhists from around the world.

These sites not only provide insight into the early spread of Buddhism but also showcase the artistic and architectural achievements of ancient Indian civilizations. They serve as cultural bridges that link the past to the present, attracting not just the devout but also historians, archaeologists, and tourists intrigued by their spiritual and historical significance.
