This project aims to upskill the women in Arusha, Tanzania by empowering them through handcraft of shoemaking.

The workshop will run for 4 days centered around making sandals. The participants will gain hands-on training and foundational knowledge of shoemaking which will lead to secure employment and fincial independence. They will receive shoemaking toolkits, lasts, materials and more.

The workshop aligns well within local context and with the range of activities set up by International Volunteer HQ. The goal is to provide the locals with a pathway to independence, nurturing their creativity, upskilling and encouraging self-sufficiency. With support from the Footwear Design team, DMU Global, and International Volunteer HQ (IVHQ), this project not only promises to deliver skill development but also personal growth, leading to a hopeful future for all participants.

Personal Reasons
I attened the Italian-Congolese Forum to promote dialogue between artisans and SMEs in Rome last year, where I met Gladis Koumou, an inspiring Congolese bespoke shoemaker. Who has the vision to open a shoemaking factory in Congo. He is determined to close the skill gap as the country is importing footwear without the skills to produce their own. Closing the gap will allow the country to become self-sufficient. His passion and dedication to not only his dream and business but also the betterment of his country deeply inspired me.

At the same event, I discussed my aspirations of becoming an inclusive footwear designer with the ambassador who represents Congo in Italy. He immediately supported my dreams and believed in closing the skill gap in Congo.

I am committed to supporting their vision in any way I can. The smallest change can make a world of difference.
