My Travel Story

Hi, I'm Jordan! I've always loved being outdoors, even when I was little. For as long as I can remember, I've much preferred playing in the mud, spending time in the woods, and just getting outside to enjoy and appreciate nature. I've dreamed of doing the Appalachian Trail for my whole life but never really thought it was something I could actually do - it seemed like a fantasy or fairytale. Much of this is due to me having multiple chronic illnesses, most of which revolve around joint problems and chronic pain. They're progressive and only going to get worse with time, but through hiking and weightlifting I've strengthened my body to a point where I thankfully don't experience too many symptoms - for now. Unfortunately, this won't last forever and I will end up being unable to hike sooner rather than later at some point. Hiking the entirety of the Appalachian is something I want to do before I pass that point, because I know I'll deeply regret it if I don't. So given where I'm at in life, it's become a reality for me to hike the AT next year and I couldn't be more excited! However, my student loans are very pricey and a bit of a concern of mine while out on my hike. I'm saving every possible dollar between now and then, giving up luxury items, selling belongings, and passing up opportunities in order to do this. I'll be spending roughly $3,000-$5,000 on food and supplies during the hike, not to mention around $6,000 on my loans during that time. Any little bit helps me immensely as I'm upgrading gear, planning my finances, and preparing to live in the woods for 5-6 months. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity that I feel a deep connection to and is a dream come true for me. As I mentioned, time to do this is limited as my chronic illnesses get worse and will sooner than later prevent me from living my dreams. I will be coming out the other side of this an entirely new person, with a brand new perspective and appreciation for life. Thank you in advance for anything you are willing to contribute - being able to do this means the absolute world to me.
