Being 1 of only 12 selected out of 110,000 in the U.S. and Canada for the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards is an incredible honor—especially as a 17-year-old single father who's faced immense hardship. After learning I was a dad, I lost my cousin to cerebral palsy and my grandfather, a volunteer firefighter, to stage 4 bladder cancer. My award-winning photography is a tribute to his legacy of service. Being recognized at Carnegie Hall is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, but financial struggles hold us back. I want to show my son that even through loss and adversity, hard work and heart shine through.
