My Travel Story

by: Madison Bentley Start Date: Dec 21, 2022 - End Date: Mar 10, 2023
For as long as I can remember, I have been so incredibly passionate about conservation, sustainability, and overall saving the world. I am currently a junior studying Conservation Biology and Ecology at ASU, and I have straight A's because I love what I am learning that much. Whenever people ask what I want to do when I grow up, my answer is "I want to save the world". In reality, I know I can't save the planet, but I can do something to fix the harm humans have done to it. I love anything to do with nature, even though I haven't had much opportunity to experience it. My dream is to study endangered species, and implement ways to help save them. When I was presented with this study abroad opportunity, I had to jump at the chance. Over spring break, I will be going to La Paz, Mexico, to learn how sustainable fishing methods are being implemented to reduce the number of sea turtles being caught in fishing nets. I will be able to snorkel with whale sharks and sea lions to learn about their ecology and conservation, as well as have hands-on experience with the monitoring and documentation of sea turtles in the area. When I picture what I want to do when I grow up, exactly what I will be doing on this trip is what I am picturing. I know for a fact that this is going to be one of the best things I will ever do in my life, but I just need a little help getting there. I am beyond excited to have this opportunity, and I seriously thank anybody that can help me experience it.
