My Travel Story

by: Kait Coker Start Date: Nov 8, 2017 - End Date: May 7, 2018
My name is Kaitlin Coker and In June 2018 I will be heading to a Mental Health Placement in Bali with SLV.  This organization provides work to help those suffering with mental health problems in Bali, India, and Sri Lanka.  They Provide psychology graduates from around the world the opportunity to gain valuable, practical experience in the mental health sector whilst being immersed in a unique and exciting culture. I am in my final year of my undergraduate degree in psychology at the University of Dalhousie in the hopes of entering a Masters Degree program in clinical psychology next fall.

In this placement I will be putting my knowledge and experience I have gained from my undergraduate degree from the field of psychology. This experience will be put to good use over 4 weeks where the SLV team and I will be running sessions in one of Indonesia's inpatient psychiatric facilities as well as teaching English and working with people with specific needs. These workshops and projects will include interactive activities, creating thinking and integration to encourage acceptance and exploration of emotions in a non-confronting way.

Less than 1% of Indonesia's national health care budget goes to funding mental health-care treatment, making it extremely difficult for people with mental health disorders there to find the proper care. There is a serious lack of psychiatrists compared to individuals who are suffering.  The lack of resources for mental health in Bali has left thousands of Indonesians without proper care, creating the need for SLV and the projects they provide to the patients. The help that SLV provides to the psychiatric facilities benefits the community and is a step toward creating a better mental health environment for the people in Bali.

Thank you in advance for anything that is given. This is an amazing opportunity for anyone in the Field of Psychology and I am lucky to have been accepted into this program. This program will help those suffering with their mental health in Bali while assisting in my training in the field of clinical psychology.  My main passion is developing my understanding and knowledge of clinical psychology with the aim to venture into this field. This clinical psychology training would be very beneficial because for my experience in the field and will help guide me as I enter a Masters Degree to further my knowledge in psychology. Anything that is given big or small is welcomed.
