My Travel Story

by: Meagan Schenk Start Date: Sep 14, 2017 - End Date: Dec 25, 2017
Greece is an incredibly diverse country full of various cultures largely because of its location at the junction between the East and the West. Getting the opportunity to take a psychology course that focuses specifically on the culture of Greece seemed like a foreign idea up until this year. As a biochemistry major and psychology minor at Augustana, this course would allow me to fulfill a minor requirement in a subject I have unexpectedly grown to love. With that being said, I am more than excited to venture out and experience parts of the world that are so unfamiliar to me right now.

The biggest reason I have decided to study abroad is to see the world and experience differing outlooks, cultures, and interests. Not only is Greece a beautiful place to spend your days, it’s also full of social and architectural culture. Through this program I will be able to experience a side of psychology that I am not able to experience in Sioux Falls. Psych is notorious for the debate on nature vs. nurture and relocating myself to a whole new country will help me better understand how nurture can influence the developmental stage of young adults. Continuing off of that point, the sociocultural effects of growing up in a completely different atmosphere than college-aged students in Greece have limited my interests to activities that can only be performed in South Dakota. My hope is that I will get to experience new hobbies that are favored in Greece that I do not have the opportunity to come across in the United States. However, I have a deep love of photography that I plan on bringing with me as I experience the beauty of all of the stunning islands, architecture, and people of Greece. Lastly, this is truly the opportunity of a lifetime. There will be no other time in my life that I can set aside nearly a month of my time to immerse myself into a completely new domain of living.

Thank you for taking the time to read about my passion for adventure and a new outlook on life. Asking for money is a difficult task, so don't feel obligated to donate!
