I'm working on preserving a poorly documented language in Nigeria, Mada, by collecting vital data to document aspects of its grammar. The data collection will significantly impact my education as a PhD researcher by providing me with the primary data needed to complete my thesis. The findings will contribute to the field of linguistics, it will equip me in the area of fieldwork. With this project, i aim to make a difference in the Mada-speaking community by documenting and preserving their language for future generations, empowering community members to appreciate their language and cultural heritage, and providing language resources and materials for educational purposes. I am passionate about this project because i believe language is a vital aspect of the community's identity and culture. The Mada language, like other minority languages, faces the risk of extinction, and i feel a sense of responsibility to contribute to preserving it. The Mada people have a vibrant culture, and their language needs to be documented in all aspects. Some attempts have been made to preserve the language, and this present project will culminate in a PhD thesis to be defended at Rhodes University, Makhanda, South Africa. The project is meaningful to me because it aligns with my values and research focus on minority languages, with a focus on the Platoid languages of Nigeria.I believe that documenting aspects of the language will contribute to its documentation and accord it some social functions in the face of other languages spoken in the region.
