Learning a second language has enriched my life in ways I never imagined. Foreign language was a required elective in middle school. I couldn’t have envisioned then how learning a second language would shape my future. Now, in my seventh year of Spanish, I have grown to love the language and the ability to immerse myself in a culture that is not my own. As an undergraduate student looking to minor in Spanish and become fluent in the language, it has always been my dream to pursue international study-abroad programs, continue to learn and grow in the language through civic volunteer opportunities within Spanish speaking communities, and aspire to broaden my understanding of global issues through the lens of diverse cultural perspectives. Furthermore, by embarking on this life-changing journey, I will be able to embrace not only the Spanish culture but also the Spanish language as I live with a host family and spend time in a place that fully immerses me and allows me to achieve my goal of becoming completely fluent in the language. During this trip, I will be able to expand my knowledge by taking FLS 332 which focuses on my oral and written comprehension as well as FLS 392 which will allow me to have an in-depth understanding of Spain's culture and civilization. By taking these courses, I will complete two more classes towards my Spanish minor and gain a newfound knowledge of both the Spanish language and the people, culture, traditions, and beautiful sights that Spain has to offer.
