My Travel Story

by: Katlyn Marie Start Date: Mar 12, 2018 - End Date: Jul 31, 2018
Hi everyone!
My name is Katlyn and this September, my best friend Alexis and I are taking on Africa in a huge way! We are planning a trip to Arusha, Tanzania, and becoming volunteers at a Woman's Shelter for a month. I strongly believe that this trip will help women and children to fight against discrimination and violence in Arusha by providing education and guidance as they heal from homelessness, poverty and abuse.

Through the Pippi House Foundation, we will be working with a women's shelter, where more than 50 girls and women between the ages of 12 and 24 are cared for together with their children. They are all given the opportunity to attend school or to get an education depending on their age. The Pippi House Foundation exists to provide shelter, food, safety and psychological support to the vulnerable women and children of Tanzania. The girls at Pippi have been removed from unimaginable situations of exploitation, sexual and physical abuse, domestic violence, forced marriage, commercial trafficking, prostitution, homelessness and extreme poverty.

During this trip, some of our duties will include: teaching English and mathematics, tutoring, create games and sports for the children in the afternoons, plan and coordinate fun and social activities for the girls, offer cooking classes, teach computer skills, provide health and education services, support administrative tasks, improve and maintain the website, do marketing, fundraising and much more!

I have always had a passion for helping others. I recently graduated from the practical nursing program at Canadore College and intend to further my education in the future.. As a strong independent woman, I am ready to nurture and build permanent friendships with other women and immerse myself in a new culture where I can learn new ways of life, language and thinking. My best friend and I are determined to take this journey together to open our eyes to the global world. I personally have never travelled outside of my home country and feel as though surrounding myself with great woman would be an excellent introduction to international travel. Whether the change is big or small the impact produces the same result. I am ready to help others but also have others teach me. This will become a learning experience that not only helps others but will help me become a better person.
