My Travel Story

My name is Sydney Tucknott and this summer I hope to volunteer in Nairobi, Kenya with special needs children! In Nairobi, children with physical and intellectual disabilities are subjected to severe stigma and potential harm. Due to this stigma they often bring shame to their families and inturn are kept hidden from the public sector without access to the proper resources they need. I want to be a compassionate support system for these children that need love and acceptance. My goal is not just to provide short-term relief but to enhance sustainable programs that will have a lasting impact. Your contribution will help create opportunities for these children to participate in activities that foster their independence and promote inclusion within their communities. Furthermore, I am a psychology major with a minor in child development. Next year, I will be apply to graduate schools for developmental clinical psychology with the goal of helping children navigate healing and life-enhancing proccesses. By living in Kenya for a month, I will broden my perspective which will help contribute to the cultural competency necessary to do theraputic work. Through this experience, I hope to hone the skills necessary to empathetically reach individuals with diverse contexts and experiences. By supporting me in this volunteering endevor, you will ultimately be helping our future generations reach their fullest potenial!
