Help send Marlowe back to Africa!
My Travel Story
This summer, I hope to study abroad in Tanzania stuying wildlife management, conservation, ecology and the impacts of climate change on the local communities and wildlife in Rhotia, Masaai Steppe.
My story has been continuously evolving, and if I've learned anything, it's to embrace each and every exciting turn -- even the sharp ones that seem daunting and scary. My experience in Africa solidified my passion for so many things -- history, hearing and telling people's stories, the natural environment, wildlife, and above all, learning -- culminating in my desire to pursue a career in international and environmental journalism. As such, this program will allow me to not only return to the continent that forced me to rediscover my love for the natural world, but also to take a 4-credit class in wildlife management that will count towards a minor at UF in wildlife ecology and conservation. In addition, I will complete two credits of independent study under the guidance of esteemed journalist, writer and professor Cynthia Barnett, with whom I will create a plan to report on a conservation issue in Tanzania while I am there and produce a feature article for publication. (If you're curious, it will likely be based on gendered roles in marine conservation and how women play a large and underrepresented role in it.)
I have been in the process of making a study abroad trip for this summer happen since last semester, and indeed, hoping to study abroad was a big factor in my college decision. Part of my destiny lies in traveling far, traveling long and traveling often (sorry, Mom and Dad); this will be one of many steps towards a long life ahead of me full of experiencing other cultures, solving problems and telling the stories of people in need of a voice.
If you can, please help me return to Africa -- no contribution is ever too small or will ever go unappreciated -- and, like Hemingway, perhaps I too can see the snows of Kilimanjaro.
