Hello and Dia dhuit, everyone! I've finally received confirmation, so I can formally announce the news--I am incredibly blessed to be studying abroad at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland for the fall semester through IES Abroad! While I don't know exactly what I'll be studying, I have applied to take courses in Russian, Irish, Irish History, and Political Science. This opportunity will give me experience living abroad in a country close to my heritage, increase my academic rigor, and provide me with a chance of a lifetime to see the world on my own. I will also be representing the United States in this difficult time, and hope to make a difference (even if it's just a dent) in the way we are perceived across the pond.
I am so excited to live in downtown Dublin and to travel around the country, seeing everything there is to see. I am perhaps most excited to go back to Northern Ireland and visit Draperstown in Derry, where my great-grandmother was born.
Depending on my academic and financial capabilities, I would also love to see a few other places in Europe while I am just a hop, skip and a jump away. My primary targets are Russia, where I will be able to visit my Little Mattingly, who is also studying abroad this semester. Going to Russia will also allow me to practice my language skills and get some immersion in the culture, which will be extremely beneficial to my education and career. I also hope to go to Poland and Germany to visit where the rest of my ancestors came from.
Unfortunately, the nature of this program and my goals for it are expensive. While I have been working this summer to save up, I am falling short due to the nature of my work schedule and unexpected expenses rising as the date of my departure nears.
I hate asking for help, but I want to make this experience the best it can possibly be. Any help you can provide would mean the world to me. I will be sending postcards to anyone who helps (but you can always see my pictures like the ones posted here, and posts on Facebook otherwise)!
Any money raised here will go toward NECESSARY EXPENSES (not souvenirs, I promise!) such as food, housing, airfare, and visa fees.
Thank you so much! Go raibh maith agat!
