My Travel Story

When I was four years old I told my mother that I was going to become a doctor someday so that I could take away her Diabetes. It was awful to watch her prick her fingers multiple times a day, and I always felt helpless when she had severe high or low blood sugars. But, it never bothered me to help her; the blood; the needles; the sights and sounds and smells of her illness never got to me. I felt like a natural helping her.
Fast forward 10 years and my dad was diagnosed with APL (acute promyelocytic leukemia) and was hospitalized for 42 days in which no one could visit him except my mom. I felt so powerless and vulnerable during this time and without being able to see him I learned as much as I could about his cancer so that when he came home I could help him get through the next hard part. He did come home but there were so many treatments and appointments. Whenever he could take me he would and I was fascinated by the doctors and nurses and their knowledge and eagerness to help my dad.
I knew when I was young that I wanted to be a doctor to help people but this experience just solidified that feeling. I want to help people come back from illness and thrive.
Before my Freshman year I applied for the Sports Medicine Program at my local high school to gain as much medical knowledge as possible before college. This is my second year in the program and it has benefitted me a great deal.
Then, I received the letter from the Academy of Future Physicians telling me that I had been nominated to join the program this summer as a delegate. To be able to gather with other students like myself who have goals of joining the medical field and get the chance to listen to some of the current leaders in medicine, some of who are Nobel Prize winners, or inventors is a dream come true for me. I have been given the opportunity to network with not only medical professionals and students but medical school deans, and future leaders of medicine. This could help me immensely when choosing the right medical school.
The location of the Congress is also meaningful to me because my maternal grandmother, who I never got to meet, was born in Boston and I have never been. I look forward to meeting family and seeing the place that she was born and maybe even venturing out to the old family farm in New Hampshire.
This is truly the adventure of a lifetime for me and I would very much appreciate any penny that you would be able to give. Thank you so much.
