I decided to take a vacation last year for my 34th birthday to the Dominican republic. That first trip was a bit of a disaster because my hotel caught on fire and I lost everything I came with. While stuck there waiting for a replacement passport to go home, I was lucky enough to be able to travel into the capital city and actually stay with people who looked like me. It was fascinating to see people of color who spoke Spanish since any Spanish speaking person i had ever seen in my life was Mexican and they are pretty fair skinned. I really wanted to learn more about the people of this island so I returned for a second trip in the summer. It was wonderful. I had to relearn Spanish to be able to do basic communications with locals but they seemed enthusiastic to speak to me in English. I have fallen so in love with this island and it's people and I want to be able to go back again and document what I see to share it with other people like me who want to know what it's like to travel abroad for the first time as an adult. I want to be able to immerse myself in as much of the life as I can do I hope to be able to stay for at least a month and film. The problem is I don't have enough to cover that long of a trip. Hopefully I will find people as curious as I am about this place to help.
