My Travel Story

by: Lilly Aquino Start Date: Jul 22, 2023 - End Date: Aug 20, 2023
Hurricane Maria impacted the modest island of Puerto Rico in 2017. The island has yet to fully recover from the effects this catastrophic event had. I am looking to plant some trees and create artwork with the locals to assist in the healing process. I am completing volunteer work in the island of Puerto Rico for the following reasons:

Helping Communities in Need: Puerto Rico has faced various challenges, including natural disasters like hurricanes and earthquakes. Many communities may still be in the process of recovery and rebuilding. By volunteering, I am directly assisting those who need it most, providing vital support to communities in need. Making a Positive Impact. Volunteering will allow me to make a positive impact on people's lives.

Cultural Immersion: Volunteering in Puerto Rico will offer me a unique opportunity to be immersed in the local culture. Were I will have the chance to interact with local residents, learn about their traditions, language, and history, and gain a deeper appreciation for the island's rich cultural heritage.

Personal Growth: Engaging in volunteer work is personally enriching. It offers a chance to step out of your comfort zone, develop new skills, and gain valuable life experiences. Volunteering often challenges one to adapt to new situations and work collaboratively with diverse groups of people.

Building Connections and Relationships: Volunteering will allow me to connect with like-minded individuals who share a passion for giving back to others and making a difference. These connections can lead to lasting friendships and networking opportunities.

Contributing to Sustainable Development: Some volunteer programs in Puerto Rico focus on sustainable development and environmental conservation. By participating in such initiatives, I can help protect the island's natural beauty and contribute to a greener, more sustainable future.

Learning and Building Empathy: Volunteering will expose me to different perspectives and life situations. It can lead to increased empathy and understanding of the challenges others face, fostering a sense of global citizenship.
