Hi, my name is Jediah de la Haye.  I am currently 14 years old and have been accepted by the Redcliffe State High School to join a team of up to 32 students who will travel to Sri-Lanka as a High School Antipodeans Team in June 2020.   It is a 10-day journey which will give me a different perspective of life in a small country.

Sri-Lanka with a population of 21.44 million, is smaller in area than Tasmania - (population of half a million). Australia’s population is 24.6 million. Sri Lanka is densely populated. The majority of its people are poor,
live in rural areas, and depend on agriculture for their livelihood.

Whist there we have the opportunity to work directly with a local community but as yet we do not know what our project will be. The website https://antipodeans.com.au/sri-lanka shows a like group building a concrete block building.

I am seeking sponsors to assist with the costs of getting me there.  Along with these funds, I will require specific clothing, shoes, a backpack and sleeping equipment to see me through the trip.

This is a journey of a life time for anyone and it will give me a chance for me to form new friendships and give back to others in need.

A previous student who went on a similar trip said “You add a layer to yourself as a person, learning more than you would in a year of school.  Other cultures enrich and enlighten you to the true extent of diversity in our World.”

I hope that I can feel the same way once my journey ends.  I understand that I will have to go outside my comfort zone and may feel unsure of myself but if I can help put a smile on just one person’s face, I know I have achieved my goal.  This experience will give me a better understanding of another culture, how they live and help me to appreciate how lucky I actually am.

A little about me – I am the youngest of 3 boys, born and bred here on the Redcliffe Peninsula.  I have been volunteering with PCYC in the Youth Management Team (5 years) and we help out at school discos, run events at local events such as Kite Fest, Picnic Hill and Festival of Sails.  I am also an assistant coach at PCYC for trampoline and tumbling.

I am currently seeking work afterschool or on weekends to raise funds and will also be fundraising to further support the cause.

Confirmation of the team trip can be confirmed with the Antipodeans Team on 1800 502 015 or email office@antipodeans.com.au
My reference ID number is: GM-021362
Brylee Taylor from Redcliffe SHS on (07) 3897 1111, will also confirm my participation.
If you are able to support my trip, I would love to hear from you via my mothers’ email scottyleanne@hotmail.com

    Change of location
Due to the recent and unfortunate events in Sri Lanka, the team at Antipodeans along with the School have decided that our destination has now been changed to Cambodia. Time for me to do a little research on my new destination.

I would like to say a huge thank you to those who have donated, it is greatly appreciated. I am in the process of selling Mothers Day raffle tickets to raise a few funds and now that I have turned 14, I hope to have a little more luck finding a job. I have been lucky enough to also have a sleeping bag donated as well.
