My Travel Story
Ever since I was a child I've loved spending time outdoors! Nature became a peaceful place for me where I could center myself and remain grounded in the present. I've learned firsthand the incredible benefits that spending time outdoors has on improving mental health. Additionally, having family members in the military has shown me the importance of our service members along with the struggles they face on a daily basis. As a psychology major, my dream is to one day create an outdoor program centered on improving mental health and developing positive coping techniques using nature for service members and veterans. A road trip across the country would allow me to learn more about how nature positively influences mental health. Exploring the country will also expose me to the different environments that could be at my disposal to help work with others in improving their mental health.
My best friend has also grown up with a love of the outdoors! When she was young her grandfather used to take her fishing in local lakes and streams. She loved fishing with her grandfather so much that her love quickly developed into a passion for everything related to the outdoors including hiking, camping and hunting. As a result, she is now studying Wildlife and Fisheries Management and is dedicated to environmental protection and conservation. Her dream is to one day work in the Department of Environmental Conservation as an officer to help protect the environment and preserve it for years to come. A road trip across the country would allow her to learn even more through hands-on experience about the environment that she is passionate about and wants to protect. She could see a variety of habitats and species and conservation and protection measures across the country along with gaining exposure to the different park systems she wants to work with.
While on our road trip, we want to produce a photo story using my best friend's dog Timber to illustrate our adventure. We both love photography as a hobby and believe that a photo story would be the perfect way to document our trip! After a year of virtual and remote learning due to the pandemic, a road trip across the country would be the perfect way to make up for lost time in our education! Creating the photo story would focus our trip and allow us to share our adventure with others!
