My Travel Story

by: Ashley Brodrick Start Date: Jun 12, 2021 - End Date: Dec 28, 2021
My name is Ashley and I am a current third year medical student applying for residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology this upcoming fall. I am passionate about women's health and providing resources to those that do not have easy access to them. COVID-19 has greatly impacted everyone; for me, it has limited my clinical experience time. By participating in this elective abroad, I will be able to further expand my medical skills and knowledge before starting residency next year. In Kenya the current Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) is 362 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births, and the still birth rate is 23 deaths per 1000 live births. Maternal Mortality is one of the most preventable causes of death. Prenatal care, antenatal care, and post-partum care are crucial in the prevention of maternal death. Through this elective I will be able to give back to a community that struggles with a high MMR by providing healthcare and assisting with births and post-partum care. Through this program, I will also aim to educate and inform individuals on reproductive health and health in general. After completing my residency, I would like to continue to make trips like these yearly. This experience would be a great end to my medical school career before starting residency!

I thank you for your support of my medical education!
