In September 2017 I will be embarking on a Mental Health Placement in Bali with SLV. This organisation works to help those suffering from mental health problems in Bali and Sri Lanka. At the same time, it allows people like me to gain invaluable experience and develop skills in the clinical field of psychology.

In Bali only 2% of the national budget was allocated to mental health, 7 out of 34 provinces are without hospitals and programmes and there are a severe lack of psychiatrists compared to individuals who are suffering. This lack of availability of resources and support means many people go left untreated and suffering from psychological conditions and discrimination.

By having this opportunity this means I will be able to help individuals with mental health problems. This is done through using knowledge of psychology, causes and treatments which can all be made specific to the particular individual. Our typical day over the 4 weeks will involve working in a psychiatric hospital, with those who have special needs and participating in youth teaching projects teaching English to those who may have needed to travel miles for our help. Workshops and projects will include interactive activities, creative thinking and integration to encourage acceptance and exploration of emotions in a non-confronting way.

Thank you for anything given, any donation big or small is welcomed. I’m so grateful for this opportunity and it is an extremely worthwhile cause for those in Bali and also helping me immensely in my future endeavours within clinical psychology.
