Finding Addiction Recovery Across The World
My Travel Story
Since then I have spent my life giving back what was given to me. I have worked in the Addiction Field for 4 1/2 years in one capacity or another. Whether it be an overnight Recovery Aide at the treatment center that helped save my life, to becoming the Assistant Director at a Peer Recovery Center helping people who need to get on their feet. I help with housing, job searching and connecting people with their community.
There is a stigma attached to being an Alcoholic/Addict. I can tell you I came from a wonderful home and I had no reason to try and escape from my life. However, once I started, I simply couldn't stop. I spent weeks on my couch, swallowing pain pills with Vodka instead of water or juice. I barely slept, I rarely showered, I told my mom I was going to commit suicide. Instead, I accepted help. And help is what I received.
Recovery has become my life. I don't define myself as an Alcoholic or Addict any longer. Instead, I say I am the best mother I can be, I am a great friend, a responsible employee and a productive member of society. I know how I changed my life, now I want to know how others have done the same. Every country has their own philosophy or method to how they approach the recovery process and I feel compelled to learn. The opiate epidemic is rampant in the US and we might not be offering everything we could to those who need and want help.
On October 21,2019 I lost my fiance to the disease of addiction which meant the 2 men I've been in love with have fallen victim to this. This has further fanned the fire I feel to learn more and see how this disease is handled elsewhere. In September 2021, after my daughter graduates from high school, I have made it my personal goal to travel for 12 months across the globe and spend 15-30 days in treatment centers, 12 Step Meetings, speaking with counselors and meeting others just like me to hear their stories. I hope to bring back some ideas that can be utilized in America to help combat this issue and fight the hardest fight. I can't do it alone.
If you or someone you know has been affected by the disease of addiction, please consider donating even $1 to help me make this dream a reality. Thank You So Much!
