My Travel Story

by: Kris Caren Telen Start Date: Jun 10, 2022 - End Date: Dec 9, 2022
Hi! I'm Caren and I'm from the Philippines.

I am 26 years old and have been doing small charity work since I started working because I know how hard it is for others to afford education or sometimes, even food.

I was raised by a single mother who didn't finish college and had to work several blue-collar jobs just to support me and my sister. I needed to apply for various scholarships and sponsorships just to finish college and help my mother with house expenses. And I did. I and my sister both did. Now, we both have  stable and good-paying jobs.

Since I graduated last 2016, I have been donating small amounts to people/organizations and have been doing small projects to help others because I've been there, I know how hard it was, what a stranger extending a hand means, and the hope it gives.

I have been doing mostly anonymous donations to small NGOs and organizing small events with my friends. Since 2016, I have hosted and organized a fundraising event, went to Pampanga to visit an Aeta community and feed the children there, and donate to typhoon victims.

But the pandemic has hit the world hard, harder for us, a third-world country. Since online classes have been introduced, I have seen a lot of students who needed to beg on social media for gadgets or funds. I have seen so much, it broke my heart. I was able to buy one laptop for one student. His name is John, a student who is also being raised by a single parent. I have been helping John with his school expenses since then.

But John is just one of the thousands of students who need help and I am but one person. We are slowly transitioning to face-to-face learning but the problem is still the same, thousands of students who need help with school and basic necessities.

I was thinking of a way to help more and I came across this website. I got inspired by a lot of successful campaigns I saw here and thought maybe I should try this too, maybe I can touch more hearts with your help.

So here I am, sharing a story and hoping you can help me help more people, especially students who cannot do anything with the financial crisis they were born with.

Our national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, once said that our youth is our country’s hope. But how will these young people be the hope of the country, or their families, if they themselves cannot see the light?
