Hello my name is Isabella.

I am currently in my final year of a Psychology degree at the University of Sussex. On the 9th of September 2019 I will be travelling to Sri Lanka to undertake a Foundation Mental Health placement for 8 weeks. I will be volunteering with an organisation called SLV global, which was founded in 2010 by Psychology graduates. SLV aims to destigmatise mental health issues in communities and also to create positive mental health.

Sri Lanka is recovering from the tsunami that hit in 2004, and also a 25 year civil war. This has left the country in need of aid, especially in the mental health sector as there are very few psychologists. The work I will be doing with my team at SLV incorporates the use of expressive therapies, such as, art, music, and yoga. They use a combination of western and eastern techniques in order to give the best possible therapy relevant to the culture. SLV not only aims to help those suffering from mental illness, but also to promote positive mental health.

I am passionate about helping others and spreading positive attitudes to mental health, and am honoured to have been offered the opportunity to do this. There is a negative stigma attached to mental health issues in Sri Lanka which is why the work SLV do is of great value. To be able to make a difference like this will be the most important thing I have done in my life so far.

SLV's focus is on meantal health rather than mental illness, using activities to bring poeple together and spread happiness. The work will consist of a variety of activities, such as, teaching english, helping in the local community, and helping those in recovery. The skills I learn on placement will help give me experience and skills I need to go on to become a practicing clinical Psychologist, so I can continue to spread positive mental health and help those in need.

This will be an incredibly challeging and immersing experience. One which I hope I can really make a difference in. Thank you for reading this, I would greatly appreciate any donation towards this cause and rest assured that your money will contribute to promoting health and happiness within communities less fortunate than our own.
