My Travel Story

by: Rebecca Gallant Start Date: Oct 11, 2022 - End Date: Dec 24, 2022
After not being able to go abroad in Spring of 2022 due to covid, I am so excited to be going to Italy for two weeks over my winter break to further my education!

While in Italy, I will be taking the course "Food and Film in Italy". This course is focused on analyzing what it means to be “Italian”, when we see so much of the culture idealized through the American lens. Spending time in Rome, Pisa, Naples, and Florence, we will be looking at food, film, and culture and relating it back to our preconceived notions of Italy and Italian culture. This course couldn’t be more up my alley.  I’ve always wanted to go to Italy, since my great grandmother, who I was very close with as a kid, and her family came to the US from Italy in the early 1900s. I’ve always wanted to connect more to my Italian heritage, and this travel course would allow me the opportunity to do that. One of the excursions being offered is a pasta making class in Florence. My family and I always make homemade ravioli for Christmas, from my great grandmother’s family recipe from when they lived in Palermo, Italy. Being able to spend time in Florence and make pasta from scratch will allow me to feel more connected to one of the traditions my family and I have had for as long as I can remember.

As an education major, having the opportunity to immerse myself in a different culture and community will make me a more well-rounded individual, and educator. In my Foundations in Sheltered English Immersion course this fall, I’ve been learning about the importance of embracing different cultures in the classroom, and how to aid students to be the most successful they can be, no matter their identity or first language. Being able to immerse myself in a different country for 2 weeks, where the main language is something other than English, will make me aware of the language needs of my students who may not have English as a first language.
