My Travel Story

by: Nigel Filletti Start Date: Apr 3, 2025 - End Date: Apr 2, 2026
Hi! I’m a Maltese-Slovenian-Canadian archaeologist and historian passionate about tracing how people lived, died, and remembered across time—and how those stories are told through everyday objects like lamps, ceramics, and repurposed ruins. This year, I hope to travel to ten countries across the Mediterranean—Tunisia, Egypt, Lebanon, Italy, Greece, and more—exploring connections between the Roman and early Islamic worlds in preparation for my PhD.

I recently dedicated all of my savings to relocating to my family's home country of Malta. But my dream doesn't stop at living here. I want to continue studying and learning and sharing Mediterranean archaeology.

My work focuses on the small things that often go unnoticed: a reused Roman architectural block in an Islamic cemetery or a small stamped ceramic sherd that reveals trade routes. These clues help us understand not just ancient empires, but how people shaped their identities in shifting times. They also challenge us to think critically about how history is preserved—and whose stories are told.

This trip will support both my ongoing fieldwork and professional development as a curator and my prospective PhD in archaeology. It will also allow me to document and compare material from different regions, helping build a broader, more connected picture of life in the ancient Mediterranean. I’ll be collaborating with local museums and researchers, and will share what I learn with the public through my work. I also enjoy using advanced techniques such as 3D scanning, photogrammetry, ArcGIS, and more!

Your support would go directly toward travel and research efforts that help bring these stories to light. If you’ve ever wondered how the past shapes the present—or just wanted to financially support someone's academic journey and life goals—I hope you’ll consider donating.

Thank you for helping make this journey possible.
