My Travel Story

by: Amani Nazir Start Date: Mar 12, 2017 - End Date: Jun 19, 2017
Hi everyone!

Welcome to my fundraising page for my volunteer trip to India. I am going for a week with an organisation group known as SLV. They run projects to help the local community while simultaneously helping students to gain valuable experience in a different culture. I’ll be devoting my skills to individuals who deviate from ideal mental health, the NIHMANS hospital and exploring a brain bank to understand mental health in more depth.

Bangalore is a place where extreme poverty exists directly alongside wealthy high-tech culture. There are only five government mental hospitals, which together can hardly accommodate 1000 patients, including NIHMANS. Statistics show there are 250 beds to accommodate a rush of 500 residents and only 35 hospital staff.

This lack of availability of resources and facilities results in many people untreated and suffering from psychological conditions, face stigma, isolation and discrimination.

With your help, together we can understand the severity of the psychological issues that are around the world. Hopefully, given this opportunity, I may also be a part of educating and training (once qualified) today's and the next generations to come. I may be a small part of this, but we have to start somewhere. My dream is to eradicate all the above issues and to provide further research for Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

Thank you for taking the time to visit and read my page. You will be able to follow my progress through my blog in which your donations have contributed to. Your kindness is greatly appreciated. You too are part of my dream!

Amani :)
