My Travel Story

This project involves volunteering via Love Volunteers in the Mukono Health Center 4 (Mukono Town, Uganda) which is responsible for providing essential healthcare to the people of Uganda. During the program, volunteers work alongside doctors and nurses with outpatients, inpatients, lab, malaria/TB /HIV testing, ART clinic, Labour and Delivery (maternity), Family Planning, and childhood immunizations. Falling under the Service to the World category the program runs for four weeks with the goals of improving the future prospects of the people of Uganda, providing quality medical care to the impoverished people of Uganda, and to offer practical African medical experience to volunteers. Before I travel to Uganda, I plan to attain a Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) course to work alongside the nurses providing the medical care appropriate to my training, otherwise, I will be helping patients and visitors in waiting rooms, pharmacy and in-patient areas. Other tasks may include manning the phones, filing, running errands, carrying out reception duties and data inputting. Beyond the program, there are many benefits such as enforcing my medical school application and having an extensive impact in medical school interviews (which is a crucial part of the medical school application process), but most importantly it has been a dream of mine to volunteer and try to make an impact in someone’s life or even community while doing something I have an interest in learning about, healthcare.
