My Travel Story

by: Yifan LIao Start Date: Jun 22, 2018 - End Date: Oct 19, 2018
Hi, my name is Yifan. I’m a second year psychology student at the University of Exeter. I am fortunate to have been given a unique opportunity to gain professional work experience abroad in the field of psychology. I will be travelling to Sri Lanka on the 5th August, 2019, for a 4-week mental health placement, where I will be gaining hands-on experience in the mental health sector.

This placement will consist of working alongside local professionals in their clinical settings (psychiatric hospitals) together with the community. I will be working on various challenging projects in diverse communities and will be engaged in different projects including; mental health, youth teaching, children's teaching and special needs projects. I will also teach English to students in a school classroom environment and work with older people (aged 40 +) from the local community. The placement is focused on working with service users from all backgrounds and age groups, who are at varying stages of their recovery as well as providing support for individuals who have special needs. These projects are challenging and will allow my knowledge of developmental psychology to be put into practice. The experiences I gain will increase my knowledge of psychology and enhance the skill sets that are essential for my future career.

Why Sri Lanka?

Sri Lanka is still recovering from a 25 year civil war in addition to the scars that still remain from the 2004 tsunami. For these reasons, Sri Lanka's population is in need of more psychological support. Mental health problems continue to increase in Sri Lanka, and with the lack of formally trained and qualified professionals, many people continue to suffer in silence from mental disorders. I want to work with SLV.Global alongside local professionals in providing the support that these individuals need.

All donations and sponsorship will go towards my placement fee which covers all workshops, training, transport from the airport, accommodation, food and 24-hour support. Finances for flights, visas and insurance are not included in the placement fee.

If I manage to exceed my goal then every additional £ raised will be donated to the community I am working with in Sri Lanka to fund mental health services.

I am hoping to pursue further studies in Clinical Psychology after the completion of my degree, part of which is to have gained the necessary clinical experience. If you are kind enough to sponsor me, then it will provide me with the opportunity to gain these vital skill sets that are essential in being successful in application for the Clinical Psychology Doctorate.

I would like to extend my thanks to you for taking the time to visit my fundraising page and very much hope that you will be able to help me reach my goal.

Many thanks and very best wishes,

Yifan Liao
