My Travel Story

I am heading over to the ever-expanding refugee camp in Calais on the 19th of December for 2 weeks to give the time I have between uni and my next nursing placement.

Volunteers are desperately needed to help with a variety of tasks including sorting stock in the warehouse, litter collection and aid distribution in the camp.

The number of people in the Calais "jungle" is numbering 6,000, mostly men, but an increasing number of women and children fleeing war, persecution and poverty of countries in Africa and the Middle East. People are living in make-shift tents and buildings made from donated materials, but winter is well on it's way. The good people of the UK have been amazing in their support of the migrants, where the government is failing.

Donations have flooded in from around the country, but the aid organisations there including L'auberge des Migrants are struggling to process and distribute these fairly from the warehouses to the people who need them.

As much as I am engaging myself in the fight on our soils to beat back racism, xenophobia and islamophobia from within the minds of individuals to government policies, I have time to engage directly with the very people I wish to stand in solidarity with. To donate my time and energy to a people who deserve nothing less than our open hearts and minds.

As a student nurse in London I do struggle to get by on what work and support I can get, which is why i am asking for a little extra help from those who can spare it for me to pay for a hostel in Calais. I am doing all I can to save right now as this is something I feel very strongly about doing.

Any money raised will be used to cover my living, and everything left over i will donate straight back to L'Auberge and the refugees.

Below I have included some links if you would like to find out more about Calais in your own time.

Calaid-ipedia is like a wikipedia full of everything you could want to know about Calais.

London2Calais and CalAid are two groups organising volunteer and donations for the camp.

The Worldwide Tribe are a beautiful facebook page where they tell the stories and photos of individuals in the Jungle.
