My Travel Story
My name is Theodor Reiter and I am based in Austria. To be more precise, from a small spot next to Graz. I especially like to spend my free time in nature. Ever since I was a child, my passion has been sailing. Unfortunately there is no sea in Austria. There are lakes, but sailing the seas and not seeing land for weeks is something very special. So I researched the internet and came across Ocean College.
School under sail was the buzzword for me. To spend half a year on a three-masted sailing ship and to get to know so many new cultures. When I discovered this, it was like a dream of mine had come true.
Ocean College is a project that enables students to take part in a semester abroad. The "Pelican of London" (name of the ship) covers more than 11,000 nautical miles with its students. During this time, the students get to know 15 new countries and their cultures. Together, the 35 students learn to work in a team in a confined space for 6 months. In addition to the "normal" school education, the students are also taught nautical science. They also take part in countless projects. For example, in Costa Rica we will work on coffee plantations to learn more about how coffee is made. There is also a research project that includes natural risks and global changes. For example, we will take water samples. Climate protection is also an important part of the trip. Another project is also beach and river cleaning of garbage. The ship sails mainly under sail. So it is climate neutral and does not pollute the environment.
This trip will not only broaden my knowledge and skills, but also my horizons.
