My Travel Story

Hello there! My name is Akari. I am 24 years old woman currently living in Japan. I was a former student who hold a bachelor degree in Adult Education and Contemporary Arts.

I have recently been accepted to the volunteer program at the applied theatre in Thessaloniki, Greece. It is a non-profit organization hosting cultural and educational projects for social justice. https://www.workaway.info/823722414712-en.html I would love to conduct Japanese art & crafts workshops for kids at the theatre.

Contributing to the local community by using my expertise has been my big dream since I studied at Aristoteles University of Thessaloniki in last summer 2016. Although it was a short period to spend time in Thessaloniki, I totally fell love with everything about the city, for example, the contrast of ancient history and modernisation, Mediterranean sea and sophisticated city, and lovely Greece people. I saw some politically and socially engaged arts that emerged from the economic crisis and controversy surrounding refugees, which was interesting and thought-provoking. I desire to explore and learn more about Thessaloniki.

I have been very interested in arts education in community settings, educating and engaging with marginalised communities, particularly the minority groups, for the purpose of personal and social change. I am determined to devote myself in volunteer work in the theatre in order to challenge my practical abilities, to explore new arts and culture, and to interact with wonderful people.

The only problem I face now is my current financial situation that might prevent my dream. Even though I work and try to save money for my adventure in last six months, I still need to ask your monetary assistance. All funds raised will go towards the cost of equipment for the workshop and my plane tickets.
