Live Your Life
My Travel Story
I was born prematurely with major complications to my bowels due to poor oxygen in my intestines. The condition is Necrotizing Enterocolitis. In my case this affected my small intestines.
The story I've heard many times from my mother was when she began bathing me, my stomach started to swell. She described it as someone punching me from the inside out. I wasn't even a day old.
After that I was transported from Fitzgerald Mercy to Delaware County Memorial. The doctors put tubes in me as a way to stop and slow down the damage to my intestines. But it was beyond their scope of neonatal care. Given that, I was then transported to The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). This is where I was put on life support. My hands and feet were now deemed as access to IVs giving me antibiotics. Within 48 hours I coded and was put on life support. Until New Year's Day, I was placed on a nasal cannula.
One thing my mother mentioned was that when Dr.Nance exited the operating room he said, "I have her intestines on a tray. We are removing the dead tissue and reconnecting the healthy. She is okay." Hours later I was in recovery.
I’m an inspiration to myself and I plan to inspire others to follow their dreams and never give up.
