This program is a great opportunity for me to have the perfect mix of getting hands-on professional development of my field science skills and of learning about different cultures in a very immersive way. Both of these aspects of this program are the ones that I am most excited about and the ones that I am most passionate about. I would love to work in conservation once I am done with school and in order to do so I need experience with working in the field and using the tools that conservation scientists use, which is exactly what this program offers me. It is like a trial run of my dream career! This is especially important because I plan to go to graduate school and this experience will enable me to better focus on an area of study. I also love seeing interesting wildlife, so Bhutan is a great place to see animals and ecosystems that I would not be able to see in my daily life (I am particularly excited about seeing all of the big cats and vultures on the camera traps). In addition to the professional development that this program offers me, I would also be living in a very culturally different environment from what I am used to. I love reading about different cultures and seeing how they differ from my own, so I am excited to live in another country with such different practices and get to experience them firsthand. I am especially interested in seeing how Bhutan's Buddhist religion influences their conservation work and how these techniques can be applied in other places. I hope to use my experience in Bhutan with SFS to better prepare myself for my future career and to become a more culturally aware scientist with diverse views on how to best approach environmental problems!
