Hi everyone! As many of you may know, I have been studying Environmental Studies and Geography at Humboldt State. Through my school’s program, I’ve been given the opportunity to do a short 12-day study abroad program in Costa Rica to study International Environmental Issues and Globalization! According to the study abroad website:

"This course is an interdisciplinary synthesis of environmental issues within the broader context of globalization. The emphasis of the curriculum is on local sustainability efforts in Costa Rica/Central America, and associated global-local connections. Specific topics include: sustainable community development, free-trade, agriculture & land use, renewable energy, biological conservation and restoration of tropical ecosystems.

The course includes lectures, discussions, group activities, volunteer service-learning work, and associated field trips to sustainable businesses, organic farms, watershed conservation sites, renewable energy projects, private reserves, national parks, and/or community ecotourism projects."

Since coming to HSU, I’ve been able to dive deeper into my long-standing passion for environmental and human issues. I feel this course would allow me to apply much of what I have learned and give me a broader perspective on international efforts and issues regarding climate change. The only caveat is that this program has a tuition of $2,200 which, as many of you have struggled as a college student may know, is not a particularly feasible goal. I am hardworking and managed a 4.0 GPA last semester while taking 8 classes and, in addition to being a full-time student, I work 2 jobs on-campus and can only save so much (about 80% of my income goes towards rent)!

Friends, family, and any generous soul, I kindly ask for donations of any amount and/or a share of this post so I can raise as much as I can. I’ve set up a Fund My Travel page with a goal of $3,465 (in addition to tuition, I have to renew my passport, pay for airfare, have spending money, and pay for Fund My Travel fees). If you are able to donate and would like to use another platform (which I recommend because Fund My Travel charges 5% of each donation!), my Paypal is paypal.me/kaylagomez1 and my Venmo is @kaylagomez. If you are unable to donate, I kindly ask for a simple share. Thank you all!
