My Travel Story

Hi there! My name is Keara and I am a freshman at Portland State University. I have been given the opportunity to study abroad in Rome, Italy for one month in the summer of 2022. I will be able to gain 8 credits from this trip that go towards my graduation. I have had previous attempts to go to Italy for a short-term exchange program through Rotary for two years now, but because of Covid I haven't been able to until now! My grandma (who is featured in the photos above) has been my number one supporter of my journey, but sadly passed away in January of this year. I want to make her proud and try to still go to Italy this year.

I view this study abroad trip as something that I have earned simply because of the hard work I have put in to get here. I am paying for college by myself and it would be a dream to be able to go to Italy this summer and not have to worry that much about my finances.

Learning about other cultures is something that is very intriguing to me. I enjoy studying languages and cultures so much that it has become a goal of mine to learn as much as I can. Being able to go to another country will be a very meaningful experience because I will be able to be immersed in another culture. So far in my life I have learned a lot about Spanish culture and I have studied the language for three years now. And I am excited to do the same with Italian culture!
